Biogas i Jämtland Härjedalen
Located in Gräfsåsen, just outside Östersund, Biogas i Jämtland Härjedalen AB has established a modern biogas facility that transforms regional organic waste into renewable energy and biofertilizer. By utilizing food waste, dairy by-products from Arla’s dairy in Östersund, and manure from local farms, the plant contributes to increased circularity while strengthening the region’s production of renewable energy.
Client:
Biogas i Jämtland Härjedalen
Industry:
Biogas production facility
Solution/Product:
BKtech BioOne Heat 1 MW for hotwater production
Interesting fact:
he biogas plant is designed to produce around 36 GWh of renewable biogas per year.
The process
Biogas production converts organic materials into renewable energy through anaerobic digestion. In large digesters, naturally occurring microorganisms break down the biomass in an oxygen-free environment, producing a methane-rich biogas. The gas can then be upgraded and used as a renewable alternative to fossil fuels, while the remaining digestate can be utilized as biofertilizer. By recovering both energy and nutrients from organic waste streams, biogas production contributes to a more circular and sustainable energy system.
Challenge
Reliable heat is essential for maintaining the biological processes that drive biogas production throughout the year. For its new facility, Biogas i Jämtland Härjedalen needed a highly efficient and dependable heating solution capable of supporting continuous operation while aligning with the project’s ambitious sustainability objectives.
Solution
BKtech Group delivered a complete 1 MW wood pellet-fired hot water plant designed to meet the facility’s process heat requirements. The turnkey delivery included a hot water boiler, boiler house, pellet silo, pellet burner, flue gas cleaning system, ash handling system, and chimney. By utilizing renewable wood pellets, the solution provides a reliable and cost-effective heat supply that complements the plant’s circular approach to renewable energy production.
The result
The facility produces liquefied biogas (LBG), which is primarily intended for heavy-duty transport. By cooling the biogas to −162°C, it can be stored and transported efficiently, providing a renewable alternative to fossil fuels for trucks and other commercial vehicles.
The biogas facility is now fully operational, producing both renewable biogas and biofertilizer for the region. BKtech’s hot water plant plays a vital role in the production process, delivering the reliable process heat required for stable, year-round operation.
